Dalkey Tidy Town

Plans for the next few years,  from 1st June 2006 to 31st May 2009
Our plans are flexible to respond to changes in circumstances, but the main elements of the plan are set out below.
Dalkey Tidy Towns works to a rolling 3 - year plan. In addition we have a constant programme of litter management and volunteers are always needed to do more of this. Many of our plans are in conjunction with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co Co (DLRCC), local schools and clubs and Dalkey Community Council.

Archbolds Castle :-
We are developing a school garden area, beside Archbolds Castle on Castle Street in conjunction with a Castle Park school, and the support of DLRCC Parks dept. ( scheduled for completion mid 2007 )

Bulloch Harbour :- ( Local Committee )
  1. Installation and maintenance of Portaloos for Ladies & Gents. ( completed 2006 but it is a yearly project )
  2. Restoration of the Slipway ( completed 2006 but is an ongoing project )
  3. Erection of a lovely granite stone inscribed "Bulloch Harbour" ( completed 2006 )
  4. Each year plant flower boxes for the pier. ( yearly )
  5. Installation of four new seats (wood & iron)  ( completed 2006 )
  6. Installation of two granite seats commemorating the crew of the Ituna and Anne Burrows. ( Completed 2006 )
  7. At the entrance to the harbour install & maintain a flower-filled boat. ( Yearly )
  8. Weekly litter collection and, in summer, mow the grass along the Harbour. ( Yearly )
  9. Building two granite planters at the entrance to the Harbour
( scheduled for completion late 2007 )
10. Planting trees along the grass verge on Harbour Road.

Castle Street alongside the Masonic Hall :-
  1. Replacing of the concrete block wall, with a new low stonework and railings above.
    ( scheduled for completion late 2007 )
  2.
Planting of a tree ( completed early 2007 )
  3. Re-grass the
small area when the ground work is completed.


Castle Street :-
  
1. Lobbying for the provision of a pedestrian crossing
  2. Replace or repair the bench seat at the hoarding site at the Ulverton Road end,
  3. Paint the small wall to the footpath.
( Completed early 2007 )

Chewing Gum :-
We are endeavoring to have the local shops stop selling the dreaded gum.

Christmas Tree Lighting and arrival of Santa :-
This is an annual event, which we have to start the planning in October.
A live crib with animals, blessing & lighting of the Christmas Tree, carol singing, music, and arrival of Santa.

Coliemore Harbour :-
On completion of the sewage pumping project which is due mid summer 2007
  1. We are preparing an information sign / board for wildlife details & history. ( Scheduled for completion mid 2007 )

  2.
We plan to include a telescope, to view the rare nesting Terns on Dalkey Island & other bird life.
    
in conjunction with the area upgrade, when the pumping station has been completed.
     This will be dedicated to memory of the late John De Courcy Ireland.  ( Scheduled for completion late 2007 )

Council Car Park :-
  1. We are negotiating with DLRCC to have the rear path repaired.
  2. The raised bed was completed in 2006, but requires extra planting. ( upgraded spring 2007 )
  3. In the immediate area behind Our Lady's Hall we will put also put a raised bed, so as to improve it's appearance       & to discourage dumping.
( scheduled for completion mid 2007 )

Dalkey Avenue :-
  1. New granite sign to be erected, old sign at Hillside to be removed ( completed 2006 )

  2. Upgrade to the base of Dalkey Hill adjoining Dalkey Avenue, on the hotel side of Burma Road ( completed 2007)


Dalkey / Killiney Hill :-
  1. The DLRCC plans are now due out at the end of 2007, which will include the notice / information boards that we       require.
  2. We are negotiating to have a children's playground incorporated in the development plans.

      See note below regarding the recycling banks, & Dalkey Avenue


Dillions Park :-
  1. Commission a new band stand.
  2. Repair and paint the trellis and fence in the top right hand corner.

Dispensary Lane :-
  1. Surface finish required after the building works have been completed.
  2. Endeavour to get any wires put under ground.

Environmental & Recycling :- 
  1. We are now receiving feed back from some of the local schools with regard to the above.
  2. Lectures & a Power Point presentation will be held annually for the foreseeable future explaining the
     benefits of recycling and composting including the promotion of wormeries & digesters.
  3. We are currently negotiating with DLRCC to have the glass bottle bank on Dalkey hill re-sited into one corner
      together with more bins a proper hard standing, suitably screened, and with a pull in for cars.
     ( this will be pushed for in the proposed draft plan for Dalkey / Killiney Hills )

Hyde Park on Hyde Road :-
Major plans are under way to upgrade the whole park by the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. We are pursuing the DLRCC to implement some of our recommendations at the same time.
Namely :-
  1. The addition of a children's play area at the front of the park by the railings.
  2. A hard surfaced perimeter path to allow persons of all ages to enjoy the open space. ( Completed late 2006)
  3. Planting of a range of trees and a new landscaping. ( Some work has started early 2007 )
  4. Painting of the railings

Information & Direction Signs :-  
We will survey all signage in Heritage town of Dalkey and prepare a plan for DLRCC to repair/replace as necessary

Library Lane :-
  1. Painting of the library and repair of the over the door signage ( completed late 2006 )
  2. A CCTV is required as the area receives graffiti & dumping.

Litter Patrols :-
Litter clean-ups, and collection points have been organised ( see details )
The Dalkey Tidy Towns
notice board in the Credit Union Window & also the Community Councils notice board display the relevant information, and are updated on a regular basis.

New Bench Seats :-
Several new seats are proposed around the area, e.g. outside of Our Lady’s Manor

Notice / Information Boards :-   
Displaying :-  wild life, flora & fauna and or local history at the following locations.
  1. Archbolds Castle
  2. Dalkey Hill,
several, at various locations
  3. Dalkey Island
  4. Dillon's Park
  5. White Rock
  6. The Ramparts
  7. Bulloch Harbour
  8. Coliemore Harbour.
( Please note this will not happen until the new sewage pumping station has been installed, ( about mid 2007 for completion)

Outside of the Councils Carpark :-
  1. We will replace the daffodils around the trees with something that is neater and less prone to litter.
  2. The daffodils are to be replanted in the rear raised bed. ( started spring 2007 )
  3. The current surface of red cobble lock is to be repaired and new planters
installed to prevent cars parking.

Sorrento Park :-
  1. Repair of wooden seating

  2. Cut back of over grown shrubbery.
  3. Clean out and make useable the granite seats


St Patrick’s Site opp. AIB :-
  1. We will clean and paint the furniture. In addition we will arrange the painting of the back wall.
  2.
Plans are under way to upgrade the soil area at the rear of the site, to improve the visual effect and help reduce
     dumping in this area.

St Patrick’s Square :- ( Local Committee )
  1. Clean and paint the concrete edging.
( Completed spring 2007)
  2. Maintain the planting and cut the grass.


Street Furniture :- ( see separate report sent to DLRCC )
  1. Our architect carried out a comprehensive survey on the street furniture and a report has been submitted to
      DLRCC and we are hopeful that the work may be completed this year ( 2007 )
  2. Bollards & litter bins require painting, but painting of the lamp posts has to be by the DLRCC contractor.
  3. Bollards needs straightening and replacing.
  4. Two street lights need to be replaced, and the top section of the units by Archbolds Castle need to be
      replaced as they are out of context with the others in the town.

Survey of Waste Management :- 
We will survey all the waste food establishments in Dalkey, restaurants, supermarkets etc to establish the quantity of this type of waste that is being generated, and how it is handled, currently it is disposed on an individual basis. Upon quantifying the amount, the details are to be forwarded to a waste management company for recommendations.

Vico Ramparts :-
  1. We will arrange an information sign.
  2. The brambles and grass area to be cut back and maintained, on a twice yearly basis

      but it is very important to consider that, this as a special rare & protected site.
  3. The concrete seat bases have been repaired, but the wood requires yearly maintenance. ( Completed early 2006)
  4. A new picnic table has been installed ( Completed early 2006)

Vico Road :-
  1. New granite sign to be erected, old sign at Sorrento Road to be removed ( completed 2006 )

Ulverton Road :- Steps leading down to Bulloch Harbour  ( Local Group Project )
  1. Clean back the steps, d
ig out & clean up each side, replant with shrubs & a Rowan Tree ( started spring 2007 )


White Rock :-
  1. New information sign / board planned.
  2. We plan to erect a new granite sign to complement the above.
